Born on November 13, 1850, died December 3, 1894. (died after writing that he wished his sickness would kill him)
Childhood and early career:
Robert was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a child he was sickly, and often bedridden but this gave him a lot of time to think, which may have contributed to his success in his later years. When he went to college at Edinburgh university, he studied engineering, but then switched to law. Once he graduated, he became a writer. At the age of 28, he wrote his first book, "An Inland Voyage" about his river trip in France.
Influences on Poet:
Many things from Stevenson's life affected his work such as his nurse who would tell him stories that captivated him and read from the old testimate of the bible while he was bedridden (as he often was as a child due to poor health), his trips to France and America, Scottish murder cases, and world events (historical and current). His main inspiration was Scottish society and its questionable morality at the time.
Impactful world events:
--In 1876, the telephone was invented, this helped Robert get work done more quickly, as he could communicate his ideas and get advice from others over a long distance.
--From 1877-1889 the light bulb was invented, this would have allowed Robert to work into the night more easily and with better visibility than the the lanterns that had previously been widely used.
--While Rob was visiting America, the Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public, this would have been a big news event that may have had some impact on his later works.
Impact on literature/traits of poetry
Stevenson wrote many classics that where very influential to many other famous authors who came after him. Some of his most well-known books include "The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "Kidnapped", and "Treasure Island". He had a very unique style when it came to writing poetry, often his poems (though not always explicitly) seemed to be written from the perspective of a child with childlike enthusiasm and curiosity about seemingly meaningless or mundane things, like rain, sunshine, and shadows. This helps him stand out from other writers.
